1 cup packed brown sugar
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
2 cups ketchup
1 pound bacon
2 (8 ounce) cans water chestnuts
Directions
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
In a medium-size mixing bowl, combine brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, and ketchup.
Cut bacon in half. Wrap one slice of bacon around each chestnut. Secure the bacon with a toothpick. Arrange the water chestnut wraps in a 9×13 inch baking dish.
Bake the water chestnut wraps for 10 to 15 minutes.
Remove from water chestnut wraps from the oven and drain some of the grease out of the pan. Pour the sauce over the wraps.
Bake for 30 to 35 more minutes.
After reading some of the comments on the website, here is what I did and it seemed to work out well.
I cut the bacon in half as directed (some say thirds). It yielded 32 wraps. I placed on a cookie sheet lined with foil with sides. Placed in a cold oven and baked at 400 for 29 minutes. Could have possibly gone longer but worked out well. I did this ahead of time and let them sit on a paper towel until I was ready to bake for good. Mixed up the sauce as directed and let it sit also. When it was time to get them ready I dipped them in the sauce and placed on a fresh sheet of foil on the same tray. There was too much sauce, but I would say I used more than half, so cutting it in half doesn’t make much sense. I then baked at 350 for another 30 minutes. I had something else in the oven so that is why I baked at 350, otherwise I probably would have baked at 375 or 400 for shorter time.
As before, halved bacon and wrapped chestnuts. Baked in cold oven at 400, but I think it took longer than 29 minutes. Set on paper towels until ready. Mixed sauce and let sit. 1 hour before time to leave, put chestnuts in crockpot and poured sauce over top. Put on low. Turned out good.
Used crockpot method but cut bacon into 3rds as original recipe stated. Used Roland brand chestnuts the last two years and they are bigger than LaChoy so I’ve been cutting them in halves. Cutting 2 cans of chestnuts in half and using bacon in 3rds this time yielded the same number of chestnuts and bacon pieces.
