I decided to upgrade the software that runs the inolleb.com family of sites tonight. I had been maintaining four separate installs of wordpress, one for this blog, one for the Christmas blog, one for the FHS blog, and one for my recipes archive. I wanted to try out a new comment spam filter but soon realized I would have to install it four times, keeping four copies of the same files and when it came time to upgrade, I’d have to to it four times and I quickly realized how tired I was of doing the same things four times. So I started searching around and found WordPress MU (multi user). It is really intended to help a site administrator allow other individuals to maintain their own blogs on his server while only running one codebase.
I thought this would work perfect for me. I could run all four blogs using one install of WordPress… One Install, one upgrade, easy.
If you tried to access any of the sites this afternoon, you may have come across a variety of error messages, and or issues. For example, the blog posts on the main blog were un-viewable for several hours. They were there, but you just couldn’t see them. That is now fixed, the Christmas blog is up and running. Tomorrow I will probably get the other two sites up. Overall the upgrade went fairly well and I learned a few things along the way so that’s always good.
